5 Quintessential Tips to INDONESIAN MANNERS

Hey guys! So like I promised, this will be a quick guide to Indonesian CULINARY manners...

Now Indonesians, although you may not know this, are great FOODIES. Some of my family members even take road trips specifically to savor an indigenous dish of the area. This type of road trip is what we like to jokingly refer to as "Wisata Kuliner". Wisata means travelling and Kuliner is culinary. So essentially a travelling trip especially created for the sole purpous of gobbling every morsel insight.

Perhaps later on I will post a quick guide to my top 5 dishes to try in Bali or any other Indonesian area, please let me know!

So the 5 quick tips:

1. Do NOT eat with your LEFT HAND

Now as many of you may know, many Asian countries encourage eating with your hands. It is said to synchronize your body and the food. In effect, allowing you to fully gorge the food with all your senses. Even cooking is encouraged to be done with some hand involvement. This is said to produce the best dishes ever.

However, it is absolutely CRUCIAL that you DO NOT eat with your LEFT HAND. There is a very strong strereotype that runs within many Indonesians, which is that the RIGHT hand is the GOOD hand and the LEFT hand is the BAD or IMPURE hand. The reason being, the LEFT hand is believed to be used to wash yourself after your trip to the loo. So NO touching the food with your LEFT hand whatsoever.

While we're on the subject of left hand, it is also crucial that you do not shake someone's hand with your left hand. Again it is considered rude as you are believed to be passing on your "that" bits to their hands. In the event that your right hand may be unavailable to shake an acquaintances hand you may shake their hand with your left hand but please do say sorry, or "Maaf" in Indonesian.

OF COURSE THERE IS A SPECIAL EXCEPTION FOR THOSE WHO ARE LEFT HANDED.

2. Please DO NOT drink the "KOBOKAN" water

If you are invited to eat with your hands, a bowl of clear water is usually given to "wash" or sanitize your hands. This is often referred to as a "KOBOKAN". Sometimes, if you are about to eat fish, you may be given a slice of lemon or lime to remove the fishy odours from your hands. You are to ONLY wash your hands using this water. Please DO NOT DRINK it.

It may sound like a joke, but I've seen many tourists treat this "KOBOKAN" water as a complimentary refreshment. DO NOT REPEAT THEIR MISTAKES!

Wash your hands, or merely  soak them in the "KOBOKAN" before and after you eat. If you feel like you need more cleaning then you may ask to be guided to the "tempat cuci tangan" or even if you say "washtafel" most Indonesians will understand what you mean.

3. If you are OFFERED a dish, please EAT it

Now, you may be full, you may be stuffed, you may be on the verge of puking; BUT, please eat what food is offered to you. It is often the fruits of a laborious amount of time. Housewives in Indonesia often spend love, effort and time on preparing these dishes and it is often considered RUDE to refuse a dish.

If you are full, you may choose to only taste a bit, but please EAT it. If you know you are coming to visit a relative, please do not fill yourselves beforehand. Come, slightly hungry. In this way, if you are offered a dish it won't be hard for you to have some and if you aren't offered food you won't be starving either.

4. In that way please do NOT finish of the whole dish

Although savoring an offered morsel is considered polite, you are also NOT expected to finish the whole dish. Case in point, in the event that you are offered some cookies to savour say "putri salju" a common Ramadhan sweet, you may be handed the whole jar-full of cookies. Although they may be yummy, you are not expected to finish the WHOLE jar. Be considerate.

Modesty is a running theme amongst Indonesians, and it is considered gluttony to gorge yourself. I know, i know you may think this is a double standard we Indonesians have, but this is the way our culture works.

A great tip to get many Indonesians to like you is the 3C: Comment, Complimenet  and C(Q)uestion. Sorry for the pun! But, use these 3 things to instantly get Indonesians to like you.

5. FAVOR "HALAL" foods

The majority of Indonesians are Muslims. That means all provinces of Indonesia, excluding Bali, consists of a large population of Muslims, in that way Halal food is often considered to be a better option.

In the event that you are dining with a friend, perhaps a new acquaintance you've made, it best to assume that they are Muslims so please do order Halal foods.

This simply means, for the most of it, avoiding Pork and Frogs. All amphibious animals are NOT considered Halal.

An extra tip for you guys, since this is the Ramadan season, its best to avoid eating and drinking in public during the Ramadan time. Its often considered rude and disrespectful towards those that are fasting. However, you can still eat, just choose restaurant with covered windows. Don't worry you can still enjoy dinner as normal.

THOUGHTS/millisecond II

A glimpse into my hyperaactive mind...

Hi guys!

This morning I managed to get up at 4 AM. Now I'm a roman catholic, so I don't fast during this Ramadhan season, however upon waking up at 4 I found a strangely calm sensation running down my spine as I hear the adzan calling of the morn.

Anyways, I was just thinking about the presidential election in Indonesia. As many of you may know, yester, on the 9th of July 2014 was the Indonesian Presidential Election. There were only 2 candidates. Prabowo and Jokowi. There were two main media (TV channels) which bradcasted the elections "quick count", an estimate of the results.

I was baffled, the results were completely different. While one TV channel claimed that Jokowi had won, another claimed that the victory fell into Prabowo's hands.

How is this possible?

There were 12 organizations which did the quick count, I was quite surprised at the inaccuracies present. Which lead me to think of how biased our media can be, it was quite an unsettling thought, how perhaps the media all around the world was just spreading lies to us and in action were hiding the truth from us all along.

I just hope when the official election results they aren't biased, because the thing is... with only 2 presidential candidates an inaccuracy may make one party of supporters very optimistic. Now if this proves to be false, it may spark an uproar. Not something we all like.

I just had to tell you guys this... I felt quite worried somehow.

Either ways I decided to post a special guide for you guys.

Stay tuned...

THOUGHTS/milliseconds

A glimpse into my hyperactive brain...

So as you all know, I'm currently trying to post the PART II of my USS SG trip, filled with photos. Its probably the most Photo-Heavy I'm ever going to get.

Unfortunately, I have no idea why it takes so long for me to upload. So here are another set of my ramblings for you filled in with my daily musings.

As of this moment, I am currently looking up the anime series Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun on an online manga reader. I refuse to open the TV and watch as I get massively nervous as I watch the figures of the 2 potential Indonesian presidents flicker and change. I can't bear it! I anxiously fidget as I wait for the official results, it just drives me nuts. So Online it is!

I started reading this comic as I watched ANIMAX. In primary school I was actually quite indifferent to the whole manga thing until a Japanese friend told me to watch ANIMAX.

So I started to like anime but not manga.

Then when I entered Dyatmika, BAM! Every one of my friends like manga, naturally I gravitated to it.
Some of my friends are so awesome that they even can draw awesome mangas.

I have a few friends named Hana, Anisa and Gaby who are like DeviantART devotees and ART WIZARDS.

Like awesome comic after awesome comics are bred from their hand. Like a constant flow of Gold and brilliant ingenuity flows through their pencil and manifests itself to cover the neutral medium of white paper.

I love seeing them do this, they can do now wrong.

Besides now I think reading mangas is the perfect occupation for me.

I have trouble sleeping well, and usually is in Bed by 10 but sometimes I don't sleep at all, so manga it is. No more sheep counting

My Trip: USS and SG PART I

By The Way, USS is Universal Studios in Singapore and SG is, well, Singapore.

This holiday season... thank god IGCSE exams are OVER! I have had the liberty of freeing myself and enjoying a long overdue holiday!

I love holidays, they mean I can travel more. Did I ever tell you that I love travelling so much I even considered that I wanted to quit school in order to pursue my one interest, TRAVELLING!

I've travelled to a host of countries in ASIA, and I've done some of those trips alone.

This is why I understand the problem that tourists and travellers like myself occur. We have a budget, or maybe if you're extremely rich you may not, to abide by and the lack of information about our next host country may mean the slightest difference between packing an extra 500 $ for back ups or 5000$. <= Slight Exaggeration

So back to the Singapore trip...

Now, I've always been a fairly detailed planner. I need to know before the trip my definite itinerary and budget for the day. Hey, this is what happens when you're travelling on your pocket money. At the dawn of each day I need to know on the dot, where I'll be going, how much I'll be spending and all necessary information I need for the day to go by smoothly.

This is my way of travelling.

This time, I decided to go on a short 1 week trip to Singapore. Singapore's not a massive challenge to tackle, its a safe country and transportation, food and accomodation is pretty reliable. Scratch that last one out.

However, this time I left the planning to my dad, it was to be a family trip. In our family, the planning usually goes to my dad. Problem is, he never organizes a long trip. Our family trips usually last only 3 days or 5 at most.

So here I am reluctantly letting my dad to plan, boy did I weep. It wasn't that his planning was bad. It was just my dad preferred to hope on the MRT and choose our destination on the spot. Not what I like to do.

In the midst of it all there was a huge fight, between my dad and my mom and I.

So this just goes as a warning that travelling should always be accompanied with a suitable plan for all member of the trip.

Ugh, so now the post ends up being too long. Not wanting to drag you on, I'll just make this PART I of the SingTrip.

See You Later for PART II

INDRONG

Hi! IM INDRONG

Well, actually my name isn’t really INDRONG. Indrong is the nickname that one of my closer friends gave me due to my extensive love of my canine buddy, Gembrong. So as an effect, and with the addition of my actual nickname Indra, the name INDRONG came along.

I’m a student currently studying in Bali, one of the most unlikely places to focus. Bali is a top holiday destination by many tourists, but sadly many of the websites I view online are either extremely biased or totally inadequate. They tend to hover between either extremes, being created for advertisement or being a totally unheard-felt post.

I hope to change that.

I think people who love Bali deserve better.

Well, so maybe you’re wondering… Why do I care?

Well you see I am forever infatuated with my love of Japan, sparked by a close friend’s introduction of the manga and anime world to me. Last year, in 2013, I decided to venture on my own with a friend to Tokyo for a week. Using our own pocket moneys we were able to plan a successful and delightful trip. This wouldn’t have been possible if I hadn’t happen to have an acquaintance in Japan. The information online about Japan is sparse. Imagine this, I even thought climbing mount Fuji during the peak of winter was possible. Thankfully there was Tokyo Cheapo and other helpful blogs. So I thought if I could mastermind a similar styled blog for Bali, then you guys might be able to plan your trip more.

Intertwined between all these posts about Bali will also be some random posts about me,and my life. Read them if you will. Either ways, please enjoy my blog.
